Polity divisions
Groups pitched against each other enforced by reference to cleavages in the polity, eventually leading to fragmentation.
Society persists as a conglomerate of social, economic, cultural, and political order. What is ordered in these orders are distinctions between different elements as expression of differences. When we speak about polity, i.e., the political aspect of society, a central element is the cleavages based on differentiation, for instance, distinguishing between skilled and not-skilled, rich and poor, educated and uneducated, elite and mass. Polity divisions are actualizations of cleavages to the effect that group grievances intensify to the level of pitching groups against each other in society. Divisions in polity can lead to polity fragmentation. Polity divisions takes place along lines of opposition that in the end can tricker separation. Capitol vs. Region is a polity division that is intensification of the city vs. country cleavage, eventually through ethno-political divisions which can easily lead to separatism and polity fragmentation. The main purpose of the political form, be it an empire or a state, is to mend cleavages so as they do not come to constitute a divide, that can lead to intra-polity conflict. In nation-states, polity divisions can follow ethno-political cleavages. This has at times involved major extinction and deportation of groups. As well policies directed at or ignoring specific groups can lead to grievances enforced through the perception of marginalization or suppression. State survival and development is hinged on its ability to mend polity divisions.
