The most basic of interdependencies is the security dilemma, where one entity seeks to code the confrontation of other entities in terms of violation; when entities have basically their own survival at stake, they tend to maximize their sense of security by seeking out and move towards annihilation of potential threats thus displaying a relative defensive / offensive capacity. Other interdependencies may balance the basic interdependency and relations may unfold along the continuum from metus hostilis, i.e., the enemy of my friend is my enemy over rivalry to competition, and to outright alliances that can be strong and viable. Alliances can be broken, hence the intuition of potential anarchy as the base of interdependency is deployed in analysis. Actual and deeply interwoven networks of interdependency may be very difficult to break such as kinship relations or mutually beneficial trading relationships between entities, where each party gains something vital from the interdependency for their respective sustenance. At times we would see polities so interwoven, that we could speak of codependency. Dependencies are always present and must be acknowledged and mutual recognition of interdependence may provide the base for common grounds of understanding.
